Secondary transition
Moving to secondary school can be an exciting time, but can also be a little unsettling. To help support you during this process Avonmore School have produced a Secondary Transition Booklet, to guide Avonmore families through one of the first important decisions you will make together. The aim of the booklet is to help inform you of the many aspects of the secondary transition process, as well as specific information relating to our pupils. Avonmore School does not have any links with a local secondary, and as a result our pupils attend a wide range of schools.
For general advice and guidance, your Local Authority (LA) will provide information on the whole process, with the selections of local secondary schools in this area and how to apply for places. This can be found on the Hammersmith and Fulham Council web site Secondary School Admissions page . You will have to register with the Local Authority in which you live and make the application for secondary schools online. If you choose to apply to Independent school, you will have to apply directly to each school.
For further advice the Secondary Transition Booklet gives information of the each application process, including exam preparation and aptitude tests.
In addition to this Avonmore school offers a programme of support during this transition period:
During the Summer term of year 5, a meeting is held on general information about the secondary schools application process, delivered by an external advisor.
In September of Year 6 the school headteacher and Year 6 teacher lead a meeting on the secondary school application process.
During the Autumn term of year 6 the School offers individual sessions with advice on completing the application and access online.Transition workshops and secondary school visits for year 6 pupils take place during the academic year, including experiences of the transition from former pupils and parents.
This information is intended to give you knowledge and understanding of the variety of options available to you and to give you the best opportunity of making an informed preference for a secondary school that is right for your child/ren.
The Headteacher and your child’s class teacher are always available to discuss any concerns you may have during this time.
